Breeders, research assistants, research technicians, and laboratory technicians from AfricaRice attended the EBS Adoption Training Workshop from 10-22 October at AfricaRice's headquarters in Bouake, Côte d'Ivoire, to learn more about the Enterprise Breeding System (EBS) and adopt it for research experiments.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and AfricaRice, in coordination with the EBS Adoption Team led by Edie Paul, organized the training workshop to help new users with the transition from Breeding4Rice (B4R) and Breeding management system (BMS) to EBS. The adoption team was created for centralized adoption training support, wherein all EBS-related training will be forwarded for proper coordination and planning.

With a focus on the tools within the core breeding and breeding analytics domains, thirty-one participants from AfricaRice were trained to incorporate EBS into their experiment design and management, data collection, information exchange, and sending analysis requests online.

Maria Consuelo Parducho and Ma. Concepcion Lotho, Information Systems Specialists from the RBI Data Management (DM) Team, facilitated the two-week face-to-face training workshop that included lectures on EBS and its tools supplemented with hands-on and field activities to collect data using the Field Book app. Maria Corina Habito and Tiare Hermann Some from the Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP) assisted the French-speaking participants during the sessions.

The training also included an agreement on comprehensive 30-60-and 90-day goals for the AfricaRice trainees to ensure that the lessons from the training on the adoption of the EBS database will be applied in a consistent manner. The DM team expects the trainees to use EBS following the said goals, report issues encountered, and request tool improvements and the probable development of new tools.

The RBI Data Management Team handles the adoption of EBS as the breeding system for IRRI. They can be emailed at ebsdm@irri.com for inquiries or future training requests.
